Thinking about getting back into adult league soccer? The first thing to consider isn’t what team you should join, but rather what type of playing surface to choose. Both indoor and outdoor soccer appear the same on the surface, but they are actually played quite differently. Choosing which one is the best one for you will determine whether you enjoy your time spent on the soccer field. Here’s how they compare, and where to sign up once you’ve decided.
What’s the Difference, Really?
Outdoor soccer is the most well-known version of the game we loved in our childhood. Soccer usually takes place on a full-sized field and involves teams of 11 players. In an outdoor adult league soccer season, games usually go longer and involve a higher level of physical activity, leading to a style of play focused on both positioning and endurance.
In comparison, indoor soccer plays at a faster pace. Players usually play indoor soccer on a smaller turf surface, sometimes with boards instead of sidelines, which keeps the ball in play and speeds up the pace considerably. In indoor soccer, touches come quicker, space is tighter, and the game leans more on quick decision-making and close control than long-range running.
Why Join an Adult Indoor Soccer League
An adult indoor soccer league is often the better fit if you’re short on time, new to organized soccer, or looking for a shorter, higher-intensity game. A few reasons players gravitate indoors:
- Consistent conditions: No rain, wind, or freezing fields! The same turf in July works in January, making scheduling a lot easier, without worry of cancellation or rescheduled games impacting your schedule.
- Shorter games: Indoor matches are shorter than outdoor games, keeping the sport a lot easier to fit into a busy schedule. A weeknight game is manageable, letting you enjoy the sport without sacrificing half your day to it.
- More touches, faster pace: The smaller size of the field means that you get involved in the action throughout the game, unlike outdoor soccer, where you might spend long stretches of time away from the ball.Â
- Lower barrier to entry: The smaller roster and less complicated rules of indoor soccer make it more welcoming for those who are re-joining the sport after a break.
If you want a season that fits into one weeknight without eating your whole evening, indoor is usually the answer.
Why Join an Adult Outdoor Soccer League
Players interested in having the true 11-a-side experience will have more open space to play in their natural position, and the feel of a “real” match on grass or turf under the lights. Outdoor soccer tends to be more tactical, involving more patience and long field plays, as seen in professional matches on Saturdays.
The larger playing area also impacts the feel of the game from one position to another:
- Midfielders: With more room to work with, they get to dictate the tempo of the game rather than just react to it.
- Defenders: They get an extra beat to read what’s developing and think through their next move before they have to step in and commit to a challenge.
- Forwards: They can afford to hang back a little, time their runs, and pick their spots, rather than always being stuck reacting in small spaces.
In addition, outdoor sports often provide the most opportunity for social engagement. It is common for outdoor games to have larger teams, and therefore more relaxed interactions in downtime, resulting in a stronger team culture that lasts beyond a single season. Group gatherings after games, as well as long-standing rivalries, make playing at night in the summer or fall appealing for many adult players.
Fitness and Injury Considerations
The surface that you are playing on and the format of the games are going to dictate how much your body has to adjust. Indoor games in an adult indoor soccer league are generally shorter and will involve more accelerations and changes of direction than the equivalent outdoor soccer match. On the other hand, an outdoor soccer game is likely to involve more running overall, but it is performed at a lower overall intensity.
Both games have their own pros and cons. Indoor games are likely to cause more turf burns and the abrupt stops put sudden strain on your joints from quick stops and direction changes. Outdoor games place an equally large amount of stress on your legs, just over a longer period of time. Injuries and prior experience must also be considered when taking up a new format of game.
So, Which Is Right for You?
There’s no wrong answer, it comes down to what you’re looking for:
- Want speed, shorter games, and a schedule that fits into a weeknight? Indoor soccer is likely the better call.
- Want the full field, more strategy, and an evening-under-the-lights feel? Outdoor soccer is where you’ll be happiest.
Not sure yet? Plenty of players do both across the year, using indoor to stay sharp in the off-season and outdoor as their main season.
